This woodblock print from 1870 is one of the rarest in my personal collection; what makes it extraordinary is that the entire "Kabuki Troupe" is made up of women! For those who are not familiar with "Kabuki Theatere," it is dominated by male actors who play both male and female roles. Interestingly Kabuki Theater's creator was Izumo no Okuni "lineage of Oda Nobunaga," in 1603 She started a new style of dance drama in Kyoto, Kabuki theater was born. Then in 1629 women's kabuki was banned for being too erotic, until 1867 it was men only, then Emperor Meiji took control of Japan away from the Tokugawa Bakufu/The Samurai, women were allowed to act again, but this was not to last long. This woodblock print of an all “Women's Kabuki Theatere Troupes" is the only record myself, and others have been able to find where the governing body of Edo now Tokyo had permitted.
