Spotting this elusive migrant was a reward for our patience. The Asian Brown Flycatcher breeds across temperate regions of central and eastern Asia—including Japan, Korea, the Himalayas, and Russia. During the non-breeding season, it migrates south to winter in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, as far as Indonesia. Our group marvelled as we learned about their incredible journeys and adaptability. They breed in open broadleaf, mixed deciduous, and pine forests, particularly favouring woodland edges and glades with ample undergrowth. Adaptable and resourceful, they are also frequently found in swamp forests, mangroves, parks, large wooded gardens, orchards, and scrubland. Each habitat offers a new chance for adventure and discovery, and our tour was alive with anticipation at every turn.

As I raised my camera on this Japan photo workshop tour with guests along the mossy trail, the flycatcher perched obligingly on a low branch just meters away, framed by the morning light. We held our breaths, hearts pounding with excitement as the bird cocked its head, scanning for its next meal. These birds are insectivores, deftly plucking flies, beetles, and other small arthropods from the air. Our group watched in delight as it launched into the air, performing aerial acrobatics before returning to its perch. Their agile movements and quick, darting flights make them fascinating subjects for both birders and photographers alike. For a few magical moments, it felt as if we were transported into the secret world of the forest’s feathered inhabitants.

Capturing this moment was especially meaningful for me, since I often encounter the Asian Brown Flycatcher while leading Hokkaido photography tours as well. Each sighting is a gentle reminder of the diverse avian life that graces Japan’s varied landscapes. Whether in the cool forests of the Alps, the lush woodlands of Hokkaido, or the tranquil groves bordering rural villages, this unassuming little bird always inspires wonder and appreciation among my guests—and me, too. Every encounter feels like an invitation to slow down and connect with the natural rhythms of the land. Birding in Japan is more than a checklist—it's a true adventure, full of surprises, camaraderie, and the thrill of the unexpected.
