Discover Matsumoto Castle on a Hokkaido Photo Tour

A Hokkaido nature photography tour led by me, your Photography Workshop Leader, is more than incredible wildlife—it’s a journey into Japan’s cultural heritage. Alongside photographing snow monkeys, Steller’s sea eagles, and Red-crowned cranes, participants step into Samurai history at Matsumoto Castle, also known as Karasujo (Crow Castle) for its striking black exterior. Built in 1504 and completed in 1594, it’s one of just 12 original samurai castles still standing. This National Treasure offers both stunning photos and a rich cultural experience. During the visit, I share the castle’s story, from its roots in the Samurai Sengoku era to its modern preservation.

Blain Harasymiw's Japan photography workshops are thoughtfully designed to immerse photographers in both the natural and cultural aspects of Japan. This workshop begins on day one at Mt. Fuji with a sunset shoot, and during dinner at a traditional Japanese establishment, we toast to the success of our Japan photo tour. On day two, golden hour photography continues at Fuji-san, followed by a visit to Japan’s most pilgrimage-dedicated Shinto shrine complexes. That same day, the group travels to Matsumoto Castle before heading to the snow monkey park in Nagano. The itinerary also includes rare access to a private Buddhist sanctuary, where the third-generation abbot welcomes the group. Through a long-standing friendship, I arrange private viewings of ancient scrolls and sacred artifacts—national treasures that are not open to the public.

Matsumoto Castle was overtaken and fortified by Takeda Shingen, the famous “Tiger of Kai,” known for his military skill and deep community ties. He was on his way to becoming the Shogun of Japan, but was wounded in battle and passed before reaching Kyoto; he is remembered as one of Japan’s greatest Samurai Daimyo, loved by his people. To this day, his family crest is displayed throughout Japan, especially in Yamanashi, his fief, which includes Mt. Fuji.

For those who enjoy photographing, historical sites should know the authentic history of the photographic subject. This blend of storytelling is unforgettable and makes for great storytelling once you get back home. Dozens of my clients make coffee table photography books once they return home, and a few dozen times, I have helped with captions.

Plus, many guests choose to extend their trip with a private photo workshop, allowing them to explore more of Hokkaido. Some opt to spend more time visiting with the indigenous people of Japan, the Ainu, who are close friends of mine and akin to family. In contrast, others focus on minimalist landscapes and oceanscape photography, and some can not get enough of birding and often we go back to spot and visit the Steller’s sea eagles, or the Shima Enaga who can be elusive and difficult to spot photograph, but give me a couple days. I will find them, along with other wildlife. And those joining me in Spring for the cherry blossoms, or for my annual Essence of Autumn photo workshops, extended their stay, and we spend more time exploring authentic Japan.  My photo workshops mainly take my clients into uncharted Japan, way off the beaten path, and I prefer it this way, as do true explorers.  This is more than a photo tour in business class—it’s a comfortable, cultural adventure. With expert insights and exclusive access, guests take home not just images but a deeper understanding of Japanese wildlife, culture, and folklore.

When there is no wind, you can get the perfect mirror reflection of Matsumoto in the moat. I took this image while leading my annual Essence of Cherry Blossom photo tour.,
