My annual Essence of Autumn photography workshop tour, the Essence of Spring Sakura Cherry Blossom Photo Tour workshop, and my Winter Hokkaido Photo Tour. Each workshop tour is carefully crafted for photographers eager to capture Japan’s breathtaking beauty during its prime seasons. All my workshops are a cross-country adventure, fully inclusive from the time we meet at Haneda Airport to the time we drop you back at Haneda Airport. A few unique features are that all my photo workshops offer business-class seating; we don’t cram our customers into uncomfortable vehicles. Additionally, lodging is 3-6 star, and these are not Google stars, but actual traditional hotel stars. However, in Hokkaido, I have no choice but to use a couple of photographers' hotels. Although these hotels lack glamour, they make up for it by being in the best locations for wildlife and landscape photography. The other half of the lodgings in Hokkaido are 4- to 6-star. But don’t worry, the food at one of the photographer's lodgings on the Pacific Coast is first rate, and a couple of evenings we dine out at one of Hokkaido’s most famous Izakaya's, and one evening we eat at a local Sushi shop. Comfort and safety are the first things that come to mind when I think of customer service. Spectacular photography on all my workshop tours comes naturally, as I have been scouting and refining my existing routes for over twenty-eight years. I know where the wildlife can be found and which locations are best to visit for their landscapes, depending on the weather. Hokkaido is my favourite place to be in winter. The Steller’s sea eagles and White-tailed eagles are genuinely exciting raptors to view and photograph, and let's not forget “Snowballerinas," the poetic nickname for the Red-crowned Crane (Grus japonensis), which are known as Tancho in Japanese, due to their elegant appearance and graceful movements, especially when performing courtship dances in snowy landscapes of Hokkaido, Japan. Plus, we have dozens of other species to spot and photograph, such as the Ezo sika deer (Cervus Nippon yesoensis the Eurasian nuthatch (Sitta europaea), the Willow or March Tit Poecile (montanus or palustris) is often confused with the black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) or the Japanese tit (Parus Minor) and is also known as the Oriental tit, The great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major), the Whooper Swan (Cygnus Cygnus), among dozens of other species.
Autumn in Japan is for capturing the most stunning autumn landscapes and fall colours. New for my autumn 2025 photo workshop tour is that I am including three amazing days along the Sea of Japan for Ocean Stack photography. Plus, we will visit Japan's most brilliant Samurai structures ever built at Nikko’s Toshogu. It’s on the beaten path, but I know the standard tourist times and how to avoid the tourist rush, plus, just minutes away from foot traffic, we will be off the beaten path. This autumn, we will not be visiting the Nagano Snow Monkey Park, as we have seen fewer monkeys at the onsen in recent years due to warm weather and an abundance of food in the wild. In Japan, there are over 120,000 wild snow monkeys, and there is a good chance we will spot a troop on our travels, as we have a lot of ground to cover on our cross-country journey. And by the way, at the snow monkey park, there are about 250 monkeys in the region, which make up three troops. However, if you want a date with the snow monkeys, this is still the highest percentage spot to spot and photograph the Japanese macaques.
Additionally, during my autumn adventure, we will photograph waterfalls, rice terraces, the Sea of Clouds, ancient Kofun mounds, and villages that date back thousands of years. Some villages we visit are as they were in the time of the Shogun, traditional Japanese villages. Plus, the route we will use is one of Japan's most ancient pilgrimage routes, with an abundance of ancient Zen Buddhist sanctuaries and Shinto shrine complexes. And the nature is truly stunning, out of this world beautiful, autumn in full bloom. And last but not least, we will spend a few days in Mt Fuji, of course, mainly off the beaten path.
Spring and cherry blossoms are genuinely fantastic and blissful. Once again, I follow one of Japan's most ancient pilgrimage routes on this adventure. There is nothing like viewing the perfect cherry blossoms with Mt. Fuji in the backdrop. Plus, we visit some of the most breathtaking ancient sites and power spots, with ancient cherry blossom trees. Additionally, we visit a couple of Samurai castles, one of which features the top three cherry blossom night lighting events across Japan. And then we have adorable baby snow monkeys in Nagano, some of which are swimming in the onsen. We always visit a few waterfalls. Throughout my years leading Cherry Blossom photo tour workshops, my groups have consistently experienced viewing and photographing the perfect cherry blossoms, sometimes in the highlands and sometimes closer to sea level. For those who love birding, we will spend a few hours or a day photographing the warbling white-eye and brown-eared bulbul, as well as Eurasian tree sparrows, which cannot resist the sweet nectar of the cherry blossom flowers. During my cherry blossom workshop, it’s always nice to enjoy a traditional Japanese picnic on a day with the right weather for hanami flower viewing. And then we visit ancient forests for Shinrin Yoku (forest bathing).
In closing, our route is rather complex. In a single day, we can be photographing either at sea level or 2000 meters (6561 feet) or somewhere in between, all depending on the altitude where the cherry blossoms are in bloom. And I guarantee you want to be travelling with a local, well-established professional photography workshop agency to capture gallery-worthy prints to hang on your walls or in your studio. If you go it alone, or join a run-of-the-mill tour agency, or use Google or other search engines for the best time and places to view cherry blossoms, you most likely will NOT find what you were hoping for. But if by chance you do view the perfect cherry blossoms, my advice to you is, go out and buy a lottery ticket, because you will never have a luckier day!
