Blakiston's fish owl (Bubo blakistoni) - Japan Photo Tour

I’m currently leading my second Hokkaido photography workshop of 2026—one of five Hokkaido photo tours I’m running this year. Yet, this adventure is truly special: an unrivalled, once-in-a-lifetime expedition for passionate wildlife photographers. We’ve just completed an exclusive workshop at a luxurious five-star mountain lodge, our basecamp for an electrifying quest to capture the legendary Blakiston’s Fish Owl. This isn’t just any owl—Blakiston’s Fish Owl is the world’s largest, an apex predator with a wingspan approaching two meters (over six feet) and tipping the scales at up to 4.5 kg (10 lbs). Elusive, majestic, and ancient, it’s a rare gem of the Japanese wilderness, and photographing it is a true badge of honour for any wildlife enthusiast.

Nocturnal Wonders: The Blakiston’s Fish Owl

Each night, adrenaline crackles through the group as we settle into the lodge’s purpose-built bird hide—complete with panoramic windows and plush leather couches to ease the long nocturnal vigil. Outside, the live fish feeder transforms into a stage for unscripted wildlife drama. Time slips by as we peer into the darkness, hearts racing at every flicker. And then, patience pays off: the silent, ghostly form of the Blakiston’s Fish Owl materializes, talons poised and eyes locked on unsuspecting prey. With a sudden, lightning-quick plunge, it strikes the icy water and emerges moments later, triumphant, with a wriggling fish in its grasp. Some participants stay up all night, fueled by the chance to immortalize this nocturnal giant in their lens.

Daytime Delights: Swans, Jays & More

When the first light of day arrives, our photographic adventure shifts to a nearby lake. Here, we get remarkably close to elegant Whooper Swans, capturing their grace in the gentle glow of Lake Kussharo. But the discoveries don’t stop there—as a local to the region, my expertise leads us to hidden spots where we find the striking Shima-Enaga (the irresistibly cute long-tailed tit), the vibrant Eurasian Jay, and more than a dozen other captivating bird species. And of course, always be on the lookout for the iconic Hokkaido Fox, a true highlight for any wildlife lover.

This is more than just a photography workshop; it’s an immersion into the soul of Hokkaido’s wilderness, guided by the haunting call of the legendary fish owl. Pack your top gear, steady your nerves, and get ready for wild nights and awe-inspiring days. Spaces are limited—secure your place and join us to capture the untamed heart of Hokkaido!
