Birding in Japan is increasingly popular with international photographers for good reasons. Japan is located in the Northwest Pacific Ocean, latitudinally long at 3000km, with climates ranging from northern boreal to the sub-tropical. There are two distinct ecological lines dividing Japans natural indigenous plant and animal life. “The Blakiston’s Line” and the “Watase’s Line.” Due to this uniquely rare ecological condition, Japan is avifauna abundantly rich. Over 600 species have been recorded, over 60% of these are migratory. Species that are either endemic or sub-regional endemic induced the Blakiston’s Fish-owl, Red-Crowned, Pyer’s Woodpecker, Japanese White-eye, Black Kite, there are over 60 species in this category.
Last autumn while I was leading a private photo tour for migratory birds in the Kanazawa area, I received a call from a fellow professional photographer; that they were photographing the extinct Oriental Stork in Niigata Prefecture. At first, I thought it was a joke; then I received the proof in an email quickly I changed our itinerary. Everyone in our group was puzzled including myself how a bird listed as extinct appeared; I made a call to a friend in the “ministry of environment,” quickly I got the answer storks had been reintroduced into the wild. 5 hours later we were living a birders dream photographing an Oriental Stork in the wild. Over 20 years I have been photographing the most exotic migratory birds in Asia, Japan is a birders paradise.
