Nikko Toshogu - Essence of Autumn Photography Workshop

Currently, I am leading my annual Essence of Autumn Photography Workshop. New for Autumn 2025 is Nikko, and much more. After thirty years of leading photo workshops in Japan, I always like to mix up my routes every few years, into regions I know like the back of my hand.
Once we arrived in Nikko, we quickly dropped our bags at our lodgings and headed for a Shinto Shrine and, next door, a Zen Buddhist sanctuary in the mountain region, way off the beaten path. “Zen” is a familiar concept worldwide; Japan’s aesthetics are inspiringly drawn from elements of nature, Zen Buddhism, and, in Japan, Shinto philosophies. The art of traditional Japanese gardens and architecture, which seamlessly blends with nature, has inspired and fascinated generations of artisans. We visited and photographed these aesthetically pleasing ancient shrines, temples, and gardens, which are seamlessly blended into the surrounding forest, leaving a lasting impression. After a full day's journey, we returned to our lodgings and toasted to our successful journey ahead.
Day two, we arrived at the Toshogu well before any tourists arrived, and started shooting right away. We captured the sacred Shinkyo bridge, the gateway to the Futarasan Jinja, best viewed at first light. Nikko's Toshogu is Japan's most lavishly decorated shrine complex. The buildings are lacquered and decorated with vibrant colours, and the pillars and other structures are covered in a multitude of carvings. The carvings are not simply design elements; they are expressions of spirituality (Reiju Holy Spiritual animals) as well as scholarly and philosophical mystical beings. The Rinno-Ji Buddhist Temple, founded in the 8th century, is both serene and mesmerizing. Nikko encompasses over 100 buildings and structures, and for centuries, together with their natural surroundings, has been a sacred site. They are closely associated with the history of ‘The Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu Samurai,’ and the Tokugawa Shoguns that followed. The shrines and temples contain elements of both Shinto and Buddhist traditions, which are common throughout Japan. We spent until just before noon at the Toshogu, then we departed before the tourist rush. And we headed for the highland. We stopped to photograph the Kegon Waterfalls, one of the top three most picturesque waterfalls in Japan.  From Akechidaira observatory, viewing the towering 97 meters (318 feet) of Kegon Falls, along with the breathtaking view of Lake Chuzenji. After this photo opportunity, we headed higher into the Highland of Nikko, where autumn colours are in full bloom. We visited a samurai battleground. Plus, the dragon waterfall with vibrant autumn colours, then we visited a wonderful lake with fly fishermen, the autumn colours are amazing, especially with the fly fisherman and the stunning mountains in the backdrop. After another long day of photography, we returned to our lodging for Japanese cuisine, an Onsen, and rest.
