Autumn Photography Workshops - A Journey Complete

Dec 23, 2025 | By: Blain Harasymiw Photography

Autumn 2025 has been my longest time spent in the field chasing autumn leaves. Autumn in Japan started in September in Hokkaido, where I began leading autumn in Japan Hokkaido photo workshops, and by mid-December, I completed my last autumn in Japan photography workshop in Southern Japan. Now I'm celebrating the holidays with family and getting ready for my annual pilgrimage to Hokkaido, where I will lead multiple Hokkaido photography workshops from January to March, focusing on the Steller’s sea eagle, Red-crowned cranes, Minamist Hokkaido landscapes, Shima Enaga, plus other wildlife, and I introduce my clients to the Ainu (the indeginous peoples of Japan), and on two group workhops we will visit the snow monkeys in Nagano, plus an original samurai castle, Mt. Fuji, and an ancient zen buddhist sancurary, plus much more.   But first, I will attempt to edit and go through all my autumn photo tour images, which will most likely be impossible, as I have over 3TB of images, but I will try. Most likely, I will complete editing them in the summer while at the beach house, along with my  Hokkaido images from the winter, and my annual Essence of cherry blossom images, and then I will take a couple of months to enjoy the beach and do some camping and mountain biking along the Sea of Japan from Niigata to Aomori, and most likely parts of Hokkaido.  Yup, I guess you figured out I am no homebody. About two weeks home and rested, I can’t wait to get back into the field, and am off on another adventure. I just can’t get enough of chasing the light, and those magical golden hours, and spotting and filming wildlife, and there is nothing like relaxing in hot springs after a day of photography.

So what is a Blain Harasymiw Photography workshop like?

My workshops are defined by uncompromising excellence, immersive learning, and a relentless pursuit of photographic mastery. I don’t just take you to breathtaking locations—I unlock your potential as a photographer. Participants receive personalized, in-depth instruction covering everything from advanced composition and cutting-edge techniques to the art of visual storytelling and creative expression. No matter your starting point, you’ll be challenged, inspired, and supported every step of the way. My educational approach is transformational: you leave not only with a portfolio of world-class images, but with the confidence and vision to elevate your photography long after the workshop ends.

If you’ve ever dreamed of an adventure that sets your soul on fire and your creativity ablaze, let me share what it’s like to join a true photography workshop expedition of a lifetime in Japan. Autumn 2025 wasn’t just a season—it was an electrifying odyssey that lasted over three months for my team and me, where every day felt like a new chapter in a story you never want to end. Imagine roaring down misty mountain roads before sunrise, headlights illuminating a world still asleep. Our convoys of photographers, eyes bright with anticipation, dove headlong into landscapes few outsiders ever see: ancient forests smoldering in crimson, secret valleys where golden ginkgo leaves rained from the sky, and ridgelines that seemed to catch fire as the first sunlight broke through, with the Japanese maples in golden yellows, oranges, and vibrant reds came alive by the warmth of our beautiful planets sun. All my photography workshops are not ordinary photo tours; I run only business-class photo workshops, where everything is fully inclusive, so you don’t have to worry about anything, just sit back and enjoy the journey. My pro team and I handle all the arrangements in Japan.  My workshops are not just about the most stunning magical photo opportunities; I offer much more. Participants will experience the heart of authentic Japan, food, culture, plus if clients are interested, I am happy to share Japan's philosophy, sociology, and history.  But what truly transformed a photo workshop of a lifetime goes far beyond the breathtaking scenery or the images captured. It’s all about the journey, and each day, after chasing the light, we gather for evenings of pure indulgence—savoring multi-course kaiseki feasts, the freshest sashimi, exquisitely marbled wagyu, and the freshest vegetables, all served in ryokan or hotel dining rooms that echoed with laughter and new friendships. Our exhaustion melts away in steaming onsen baths under star-filled skies, where stories and secrets are exchanged, and the bonds of shared experience grow ever deeper.

Time and again, my clients and I achieve more than just stunning photographs—we uncover the soul of Japan, far from tourist crowds and clichés. Over 95% of my routes are carved through regions untouched by mass tourism, where weeks can pass without encountering another westerner. These are not generic photo workshops; they are exclusive, deeply researched experiences that follow ancient pilgrimage paths and cultural arteries still pulsing with authentic Japanese life. You gain access to places and moments other travelers will never know exist.

Nearly all of the accommodations my booking agent and I secure are hidden gems cherished by locals, not listed on foreign travel sites, and often reserved a year or more in advance. This exclusive insider access immerses my guests in the deepest traditions of Japanese hospitality and culture, delivering an experience that is both intimate and extraordinary. Every detail is meticulously curated, ensuring you are not just a visitor, but a welcomed participant in the rhythm of real Japan.

The overwhelming demand for my workshops speaks volumes: my 2026 and 2027 Autumn Leaves and Cherry Blossom photogapy workshops, along with my signature Hokkaido expeditions, are almost entirely booked—often a year or more in advance. Yet, a rare opportunity remains: limited spots are open for my exclusive Hokkaido Winter Workshop, February 1–9, 2027, and private workshops are still available for select dates. If you are ready to invest in your photography and embark on a journey reserved for the truly passionate, now is your chance to secure a place before these final openings vanish.
