As a seasoned wildlife photographer, I, Blain Harasymiw, have had the privilege of leading nature lovers and photographers through the enchanting landscapes of Hokkaido for years. Each winter, my annual Hokkaido photo tour becomes an adventure of a lifetime, blending world-class bird photography with deep cultural immersion. Our journey is centred around two of Japan’s most iconic avian treasures: the majestic Steller’s sea eagle and the elegant red-crowned crane. But the experience is far more than just a birding tour—it’s a celebration of Hokkaido’s wildlife, its people, and the spirit of the wild north.

Steller’s Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus pelagicus): The King of the Pack Ice

The highlight of our expedition is undoubtedly the pursuit of the Steller’s sea eagle (Haliaeetus pelagicus). These regal raptors, with their striking black-and-white plumage, enormous yellow beaks, and fierce golden eyes, are some of the largest and most powerful eagles in the world. Adult Steller's sea eagles can weigh up to 9 kilograms, making them the heaviest eagle species globally. Their wingspans, which can reach up to 2.5 meters, allow them to soar majestically above the frigid waters as they search for prey. Patient and commanding, they often perch for long periods on the pack ice, scanning for fish with their keen eyesight. Every year, we charter a sturdy, ice-rated boat from the harbour in Rausu, designed specifically for navigating the Sea of Okhotsk’s pack ice.

As the sun rises, casting golden light across the frozen seascape, we glide among floating ice floes, surrounded by the icy breath of the Sea of Okhotsk. Steller’s sea eagles gather in impressive numbers here, sometimes dozens at once, their piercing calls carrying across the silent expanse. Observing their powerful talons grasping the ice and watching them swoop down to snatch fish from the frigid waters is a true spectacle. Photographing these rare birds in such a pristine environment is a dream for any wildlife photographer, and the combination of dramatic light, swirling sea mist, and the raw energy of the eagles creates images that are both powerful and evocative. The crunch of ice against the hull, the sharp calls of eagles overhead, and the endless photo opportunities make this a birding experience like no other.

Red-Crowned Crane (Grus japonensis): Grace and Charm in the Snow

Our adventure doesn’t stop on the ice. Another highlight is the time spent photographing the legendary red-crowned cranes (Grus japonensis). Revered in Japanese culture as symbols of longevity and good fortune, these elegant birds captivate everyone who sees them. The red-crowned crane is among the largest crane species in the world, standing nearly 1.5 meters tall and boasting a wingspan of up to 2.5 meters. Their plumage is a brilliant white, offset by black necks and wing secondaries, and crowned by a patch of vibrant crimson skin atop their heads. During winter, we witness their mesmerizing courtship dances—leaping, bowing, and calling in perfect synchrony—against the snowy backdrop of Tsurui and Kushiro. The cranes' haunting bugle calls echo through the landscape, adding to the magical atmosphere and offering photographers unforgettable moments.

A Journey Beyond Hokkaido: Snow Monkeys, Mt. Fuji, and Sacred Shrines

While our adventure is centred in Hokkaido, this photo tour also takes you to some of Japan’s other most iconic sights. We travel to Nagano to photograph the famous Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), more widely known as the snow monkeys. Watching these remarkable primates soak in steaming hot springs, surrounded by snowy landscapes, is a unique experience and offers unforgettable photo opportunities.

Our journey also leads us to the majestic Mt. Fuji, Japan’s highest and most iconic peak. Here, we capture breathtaking vistas of Fuji’s snow-capped summit, as well as the surrounding lakes and forests. In addition, we visit some of Japan’s most revered and frequently pilgrimaged Shinto shrines, immersing ourselves in centuries-old traditions and spiritual heritage. These cultural encounters add rich depth and variety to your photographic portfolio, blending nature, wildlife, and sacred history into a seamless adventure. A

Cultural Journey: Meeting the Ainu People

But my Hokkaido photo tour is not just about photographing birds. I am passionate about sharing the region's rich culture, and one of the most meaningful aspects of our journey is an introduction to the Ainu people. The Ainu are Japan's indigenous inhabitants, with a unique language, mythology, and artistic tradition. During our tour, we visit an Ainu village, where guests have the chance to learn about their history, experience traditional crafts, and witness performances of music and dance. This cultural exchange deepens our understanding of Hokkaido, adding a profound dimension to the photographic adventure.

Wildlife Galore: Foxes, Deer, and More

Of course, Hokkaido’s wonders extend beyond eagles and cranes. Our days are filled with encounters with dozens of other bird species, from whooper swans gliding on frozen lakes to flocks of Eurasian bullfinches and Ural owls nestled in ancient forests. Red foxes dart across snowy fields, their fiery coats a striking contrast to the white landscape, while sika deer graze gracefully at the forest edge, and let's not forget the adorable shima enaga, Hokkaido's snow fairies. Each sighting offers new photographic challenges and rewards, ensuring a diverse and dynamic portfolio by the end of the tour.
