Nippon is a nation that loves to celebrate; you can be assured that there is no shortage of festivals during the summer months in Japan. Myself being a small town boy, born and raised in Canada’s far north with the midnight sun. I am naturally drawn to the sublime peaceful natural world, but I do like to join in the summer festivals and have some fun. Hokkaido, Toyoma, Niigata. Tokyo, Nagano, Yamanashi, and Kanagawa prefectures are my favored summer getaways with family and friends. Over 20 years I have lived and explored throughout Japan, every summer I have found a hidden jewelled festival. Over 95% of festivals in Japan are not advertised in English, and the ones that are in my view tend to be over rated and way over priced catering to the tourist trade. Call me old fashioned, but ‘when in Rome, Do as the Romans Do.’ So like any other explorer, adventurer, professional photographer, photojournalist I am constantly seeking out the authentic ancient traditions and customs, and not the water down touristy versions.
