Most sign up and join a Japan photo tour during the winter to photograph the snow monkeys enjoying the hot springs. December to March is when the hot springs are at its busiest with steam rising and snow falling. The monkey's bath in the hot springs for one simple reason, to survive from the cold. Snow monkeys visit the hot springs at other times of the year for different purposes, such as to show off new born babies, swim or simply to relax. About 170 Japanese macaque’s call the hot springs home. The monkeys form close bonds with others in the group. Some of their facial expressions and manners are almost human-like; it's truly a wonderful place to visit.
Spring to early summer the forest is turned into a nursery, around 20 infants were born in 2017; a new born snow monkey can fit into the palm of your hand. The interactions of the babies and their mothers have a very human way about them and is a unique sight to see. Snow monkeys are playful creatures, after 4 weeks old they start climbing trees, swim and can be seen joyfully playing with other monkeys, they are a cute sight to behold. Every day the babies learn a new lesson that will ensure their survival.
They get their name “snow monkey” because they live in areas where snow covers the ground for months each year. They are the most northern living nonhuman primate.
Throughout the year for over 20 years, I lead professional photographers, photo tour groups, to visit and photograph the snow monkeys.
