Simply positive space is best described as the subject or areas of interest in your photographic composition. Negative space is simply the area surrounding the subject or areas of interest in your photographic composition. The subject or areas of interest is just as important as the negative space that is surrounding the subject or areas of interest; they complement each other bringing impact to the positive space or subject. The 2nd photo is the classic example of positive negative space photography composition, a singular tree on a hilltop in the snow with a broken tree branch. The image catches the viewers attention and portrays an emotional response. I took the image while on photo tour Hokkaido Japan in the Lake Kushiro region off the beaten tourist path. Negative space is not always a solid singular colour, or shape as you can see in the 1st image. There are multiple positives or objects in this image. At first glance the five objects appear to make a singular positive the sixth positive is the straight 35-degree line above the five perceptual primary objects, the line does indicate mass, but the mass is subtle enough that the line overcomes the mass and we are visually drawn to the line. I took this image while on assignment at a fine arts museum in western Japan, this is part of their storage area and not a display.
