I'm currently leading my annual cherry blossom photo tour through the heart of Japan with a small, passionate group of photographers. We met at Haneda Airport in Tokyo and set off on our eleven-day journey — chasing light, bloom, and the spirit of authentic Japan.

Our first stop took us deep into the countryside of Nagano, well off the beaten path, where the cherry blossoms were in perfect mankai — full bloom. We photographed them at an ancient Shinto shrine founded over a thousand years ago. I've visited this shrine many times in autumn and summer, but this was my first time seeing it blanketed in cherry blossoms. It was extraordinary.

After a full day behind the lens, we sat down to dinner — and not just any dinner. Authentic Japanese cuisine is a cornerstone of every tour I lead. We raised our glasses to day one and worked our way through ten courses of exquisite food, swapping stories and savoring every moment.

Tomorrow, we head to Niigata for one of Japan's top three cherry blossom lighting events. After twenty-eight years on this route, I can say with confidence: the blossoms will be at their peak. I've been tracking the weather and the bloom closely, and this group is about to witness something truly special.

Before the evening light show, we'll spend the day shooting high-alpine scenery — cherry blossoms set against snow-capped mountains — and we'll likely stop at several ancient Zen Buddhist sanctuaries, where spring is in full, colourful bloom.

As the journey unfolds, I'll keep tracking the bloom — making sure we're always in the right place at exactly the right moment.
