Uncover the Enchantment of Hokkaido: Experience Japan's Ainu Culture and Stunning Wildlife in 2026
Hokkaido, Japan’s breathtaking northern island, is a harmonious blend of rich cultural heritage and awe-inspiring natural beauty. In 2026, I invite you to join my exclusive Hokkaido Photography Workshops, where you will immerse yourself in this extraordinary land and capture the vibrant stories of the Ainu people and the island’s remarkable wildlife through your lens.

Blakiston’s Fish Owl (Ketupa blakistoni) quickly catch fish and devour it.

Blakiston’s Fish Owl (Ketupa blakistoni) sure do enjoy eating fresh fish caught nightly. I took this image while leading my annual Hokkaido photo tour.

Embrace the Legacy of the Ainu: Japan’s Indigenous Heritage
The Ainu people are an integral part of Japan’s history, having been displaced from the mainland to Hokkaido long before and after the Heian Period (794-1185). Despite facing significant challenges, their resilience and cultural identity endure. During our workshops, we’ll explore the Akanko Ainu Kotan villages, where you’ll discover the Ainu’s rich traditions, from exquisite handicrafts to captivating folklore and festivals. These immersive experiences allow you to connect deeply with Japan’s First Nations and capture the essence of their vibrant culture.

Ainu dance and storytelling have been passed down for thousands of years.

Ainu Elders have lighted torches for thousands of years nightly to protect the Ainu Kotan.

Wildlife Photography Beyond Compare: Home to the World’s Largest Owl
Hokkaido is a sanctuary for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers alike. Among its most legendary inhabitants is the elusive Blakiston’s Fish Owl (Ketupa blakistoni), revered by the Ainu as a guardian spirit. This magnificent owl is the largest in the world, with males weighing up to 8 pounds and females exceeding 10 pounds. With my experience leading birding workshops in Hokkaido, I’ll guide you in spotting and photographing these nocturnal hunters, ensuring you don’t miss the chance for a once-in-a-lifetime shot. In addition to the Blakiston’s Fish Owl, Hokkaido's unspoiled wilderness offers unparalleled opportunities to photograph the majestic Steller’s sea eagle (Haliaeetus pelagicus), the enchanting Ezo red fox (Vulpes vulpes schrencki), the unique Ezo Risu (Sciurus vulgaris orientis), and the world’s largest herd of Ezo Sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis). With a sprinkle of luck and keen eyes, you may also capture the grace of whales and the playful antics of sea otters (Enhydra lutris) in Hokkaido’s rich waters.

The Ezo Risu are only found in Hokkaido, and some can grow to the size of house cats and bigger.

The Ezo Red Fox of Hokkaido are master hunters; I observed this on diving into the snow several feet and retreating its dinner.

The White-tailed eagle can be spotted and photographed in Hokkaido year-round in winter; they hold their own with the Steller's sea eagles on pack, where they fish and sleep side by side. .

The Steller's sea eagles are magnificent raptors that have survived several ice ages, never needing to evolve; they are perfect.

An Unforgettable Retreat in the Akanko Region
As we explore the vibrant Akanko region, I recommend a stay at the Akan Tsuruga Bessou Hinanoza, a luxurious haven that beautifully encapsulates the essence of Japanese elegance. This stunning accommodation is the perfect retreat, offering serenity and indulgence after a fulfilling day of photography and adventure. It’s a popular choice for my private Hokkaido Photo Tours, ensuring a blend of comfort and authenticity throughout your stay.
