Autumn Japan Photo Workshop - The Mystical Sea Of Clouds

Currently, I am leading multiple Essence of Autumn photography workshops into authentic Japan —way off the beaten path —showing passionate photographers the heart of Japan’s most breathtaking season. Our adventure began in the deep blue stillness before dawn, with the group stirring quietly at our exclusive highlands Niigata resort. There’s a special kind of anticipation in the air when you set out so early—the world hushed, dew shimmering on the grass from the lodgings illumination, and with not even the faintest glow hinting at sunrise.

First light in the Niigata Highlands. Autumn in Japan.

By 5:00 a.m., we were already winding our way up narrow mountain roads, headlights illuminating mist swirling along the roadside. The destination: the highlands of Niigata, a place I return to year after year for its ethereal sea of clouds—known in Japanese as 雲海, ‘Unkai’. As we arrived and set up our tripods, the landscape slowly transformed. Wisps of fog rose languidly from the valleys, pooling and drifting between ancient cedars and the jagged silhouettes of distant peaks. The mountain village lights and world below us vanished, as if the mountains themselves were floating on a celestial sea. In these moments, you truly understand why poets and monks have long sought inspiration here.

The phenomenon of unkai is both a meteorological marvel and a spiritual experience. Certain regions of Japan, with their unique blend of geography and weather, create these dreamlike vistas—Nirvana landscapes where mountaintops appear to levitate above a sea of shifting white. In ancient Japanese folklore, these valleys were known as the valley of the dragons, and standing there, camera in hand, it’s easy to believe you might catch a glimpse of a mythical creature soaring through the mist. Some of my participants stood in awe, temporarily forgetting their cameras, lost in the moment's majesty.

Sunrise over mountains with mist in the valley, casting a warm glow on the landscape below.

Sunrise is especially lovely in autumn with the autumn foliage and the sea of clouds in the valley below. I can't wait for next autmn.

As the sun crested the horizon, the clouds thinned and golden light spilled across the peaks. We photographed tirelessly, capturing countless images—each frame a testament to nature’s artistry. Once the morning spectacle faded, our journey continued: we returned to our lodgings for a much-needed breakfast, laughter echoing in the dining room as we shared our favourite shots. I couldn’t resist a quick soak in the milky white hot springs, the warmth easing the chill from the morning air, before we set off again for a full day of chasing autumn leaves and exploring the wild beauty of Niigata.

Every year, this journey feels both familiar and new—a blend of tradition and discovery, made richer by the wonderful group I have the privilege of leading. It’s days like these that remind me why I return year after year.

Sunrays hitting the sea of clouds in the valley below us, autumn is especially dramatic and awe-inspiring to experience this natural phenomenon.
