I took these shots of a stampeding herd of Sika deer, while leading a Japan photo tour. To date, this is the largest herd of wild Sika deer photographed on our planet! Annually from January to March, I lead several workshops, to photograph the snow monkeys several hours outside of Tokyo, then we fly to Japans most northern Island Hokkaido. Where we concentrate on photographing the red-crowned crane, Steller’s sea eagle, white tailed eagle, golden eagle, whooper swan, black kite, red tailed fox and sika deer. Sika Deer are moderately social, living in small groups or alone, so photographing them in a herd of over five hundred is a rare event, timing and weather are crucial to capturing this. In 2015, 2016 and 2017 myself and participants photographed large herds of Sika deer.
